Direct Support Professional (DSP)
A Direct Support Professional (DSP) or Direct Care Aid works with individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities to help them live as independently as possible and fully participate in their communities. DSPs work according to person-centered individual service plans to support the unique needs of each individual.
Core duties
- Provide one-on-one support with daily living activities, including personal hygiene, dressing, bathing, cooking, cleaning, shopping, and transportation.
- Assist with medication management and health safety, as appropriate.
- Escort clients to medical appointments, community activities, and social events.
- Teach and encourage independence, safety skills, and community integration.
- Support individuals in finding, securing, and maintaining employment through job coaching, recruitment, and on-site support.
- Perform basic housekeeping and protect clients from potential health hazards.
Work settings
DSPs may work in residential settings, community-based programs, or vocational training and employment sites.
Qualifications & requirements
- Must be at least 18 years old (16–17 allowed under limited scope waivers).
- Valid SSN and government-issued photo ID (state ID or driver’s license).
- High school diploma or GED (may be waived for 16–17-year-olds).
- Ability to read, write, and understand English.
- Clean driving record (fewer than 6 points; non-driving roles may be available).
- Ability to pass a background check and drug screen.
- Ability to meet physical requirements (e.g., lifting up to 50 lbs).

- Strong empathy, patience, and communication skills.
- Ability to follow person-centered service plans.
- Proficiency in basic life skills and safety practices.
- Flexibility to adapt to diverse client needs and environments.
